Who needs to have a Food Safety Program (FSP) and scheduled compliance audits conducted

The Queensland Food Act 2006 identifies the most vulnerable members of society that face the greatest risk from food contamination and food borne disease. These include aged-care, hospitals, certain caterers and early learning services.

These businesses that supply food to the vulnerable members of society is required to have a food license and an accredited food safety program, this includes those early learning services that use caterers to supply their meals, such as Kids Gourmet Food, Healthy Cooking Company, Wellbeing Food Co....... Please feel free to contact us if you require additional information or clarification.

Any business is free to have a Food Safety Program to help manage their food business, however only those businesses that are serving the vulnerable members of society as listed above are required to have their food safety program accredited.

*Please note that on-site caterers are only required to have an accredited food safety program if they are serving over 199 meals, 11times in a 12month period. Please feel free to contact us if you require additional information or clarification.

Accreditation of the Food Safety Program and Written Advice
To be accredited, a food safety program must be assessed and approved by local council. However, before it can be submitted to council, it must be reviewed by an approved food safety auditor, a list of all current auditors can be found on the Queensland Health website. If all the requirements have been met, the approved auditor will issue a notice of written advice that must accompany the submission to Council.

*Please note if the food business has engaged a Food Safety Auditor to prepare the food safety program on their behalf, then a different Food Safety Auditor is required to prepare the notice of written advice for council and conduct the onsite audits. Please feel free to contact us if you require additional information or clarification.

Scheduled compliance audits

Once the food safety program has been approved and accredited, the food business must have their first audit conducted within 6 months of the food safety program being approved. After which the business is subject to food safety compliance audits according to a schedule decided by their local council. The business must engage an approved food safety auditor to conduct these onsite audits, assessing if the business has complied with the accredited program.

A food safety audit focuses on gathering information about a food business to identify any areas of potential improvement in the business's food safety processes and systems. It also identifies areas of the business that needs improvement and the appropriate action to correct any deficiencies. Also, to ensure that the food business is operating within the limits of their accredited Food Safety Program.

Important things to remember

You must have a written copy of your food safety program on the premises so that it is available when requested by local council environmental health officers or food safety auditors.

You must also retain all written reports of all food safety audit results and council inspections reports for the previous 4 years so they can be inspected by a food safety auditor or local council environmental health officers when requested.
